St. Georges - Myjia produced a stunning team effort to earn a fascinating 4-4 draw against RSAF Veterans in front of an expected record crowd of 32.
The game kicked off in a frentic pace but it was Myjia who drew first blood through hotshot striker Chia Junhao. Latching on to a pass down the left flank, speed demon Delvin outpace the Vets defender before squaring the pass from the byline for Junhao to sidefoot past the keeper.
It was an impressive start for Myjia who matched the bigger and more experienced opponents pass for pass, stride for stride.
Myjia continued to play with much self-belief and the play was rewarded when new signing Jerry was brought down in the penalty box. Waimeng stepped up and duly converted the penalty. Two goals up and the match could not have begun any brighter for Myjia.
It took a cruel twist of fate to turn the game for the Veterans as successive defensive lapses allowed the Veterans to claw their way back into the game. To be fair to the Myjia defence, the midfield has to shoulder part of the blame for failing to track back fast enough for both the goals.
At two apiece, it was game on and the Veterans gained much confidence from their fightback to wrestle control of the midfield and the game in general. Their No. 17 in particular, who had a brilliant game, began to come into the play more often and it was his pass that set up the theird goal for the Veterans to lead for the first time in the game.
3-2 and at this stage, the earlier confidence appeared to be ebbing away from the entire Myjia team. The game however took another twist with virtually the last kick of the game before halftime.
Junhao showed his strength and sharpness to outmuscle the defender to a through ball and with his pedigree in front of goal, he made no mistake to tie the game at 3-3 for Myjia at the halfway mark.
The second half began much like the first. Both sets of players battled competitively for the ball and for the first 15 minutes of the second period, it appeared that the Veterans were the more likely winners with their No. 17 continually having the upper hand.
It was to no one's surprise when the Veterans led for the second time in the match in the 65th minute. The Veterans attack continued wave after wave and it took a collective effort from Myjia players to win the possession back.
It was a monumental effort from the team to match the rahter impressive Veterans and every Myjia player deserves the praises for the hardwork and effort they put in on the unfamiliar pitch.
It was the correct result and a fair reflection of the quality of both team when Junhao completed his hat-trick and impressively his second of the season in only five games played. This time showing his keen eye for goal, Junhao lobbed the advancing goalkeeper from 25 yards out.
4-4 the final score to a pulsating game in what must be one of the better performance by the Myjia team. The fans and players alike await the next game hoping for a repeat of such performance.
